Futurail is a deeptech startup building the autonomy stack for self-driving trains. Our mission is to make rail the most attractive form of transport, by enabling frequent, reliable, low-carbon services powered by autonomous technology.
With our AI-based software stack, we help rail operators and manufacturers run safer and more efficient services, starting in depots and on branch lines, and expanding to mainline operations. Founded by experts in autonomous systems, we're rethinking how millions of people and goods move every day.
We’re backed by leading European investors and already working with mobility players across Europe and the US. As we enter our next phase of growth, this is your opportunity to join a high-trust, high-talent team that’s reshaping rail.
Futurail seeks an experienced engineer to shape the core Motion Planning & Control systems that ensure safe and reliable autonomous train operation. You’ll design safety-critical control strategies, ensure compliance with functional safety standards, and collaborate with integration teams and OEM partners to deliver seamless end-to-end performance across the vehicle platform.
Develop and validate real-time motion planning & control software that ensures stable, responsive, and safe vehicle behavior.
Design safety envelopes and supervision mechanisms to guarantee fail-safe operation under stringent functional safety standards (e.g., SIL, CENELEC, or equivalent).
Define and implement interfaces between control systems and upstream modules (perception, localization, state monitoring).
Deploy and test new features in simulation, structured trials, and real-world field environments, with strong attention to observability and telemetry.
Collaborate with OEM partners and internal teams to ensure end-to-end integration and system reliability.
Maintain high standards of code quality and maintainability; contribute to technical reviews and mentor junior engineers when needed
5+ years of experience in motion planning/control for autonomous systems, robotics, automotive, or rail.
Strong foundation in control theory (e.g., MPC, PID), trajectory planning, and real-time systems
Proficiency in C++ and Python; Rust is a plus
Familiarity with vehicle communication protocols (SafetyGPIOs, Ethernet, CAN, etc.)
Proven ability designing and implementing safety-critical control systems (safety envelopes, supervision, fail-safes) with a solid understanding of functional safety frameworks (e.g., SIL, CENELEC, ISO 26262)
Join us as a Senior Motion Planning & Control Software Engineer in our Munich office and help accelerate the shift from road to rail. If you're excited about real-world impact, cutting-edge autonomy, and building from zero-to-one, we’d love to hear from you.
