Autonomy System Test Engineer (f/m/d)

ABOUT FUTURAIL

Futurail is a leading technology startup and autonomy powerhouse based in Germany and France. We power the future of autonomous travel on rail with our holistic autonomy stack for self-driving trains. Our mission is to make trains even more attractive by offering frequent, reliable, cost-effective, and low-carbon transportation, contributing to the broader goal of transitioning from road to rail. Founded by a team with extensive expertise in autonomous driving and rail, we are committed to shaping the future of rail transportation.

We are entering a phase of rapid growth. This is your chance to join an ambitious team at the forefront of autonomy and rail, working to transform how millions of people move every day!

OUR VALUES

  • Bias for Action: We move with purpose and speed.

  • One Team: We break down silos to move as one.

  • Radical Simplicity: We solve hard problems with the simplest solution that scales.

JOB DESCRIPTION

We are looking for an Autonomy System Test Engineer to own the validation, testing lifecycle, and release approval of our core products. In this role, you will bridge the gap between software development, system requirements, and safety standards to ensure our autonomy stack is flawless before it hits the tracks.

You will drive our weekly Build & Deploy Cycle—pulling code, building images, deploying to test units, and executing field and HiL tests. When anomalies occur, you will lead the triage process by analyzing vehicle logs, ROS bags, and error outputs to isolate bugs or hardware faults, providing clear, actionable reports for development teams.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive validation strategy, conducting end-to-end testing across both lab environments and field deployments.

  • Design rigorous test scenarios to stress-test and challenge our autonomy system, with a specific focus on perception and localization.

  • Collaborate with the engineering team to implement automated test suites to validate functional and system-level requirements in regression testing and deployment pipelines.

  • Partner with system, software, and hardware engineers to validate software stack integration with real-world sensors (LiDAR, Camera, Radar) and ensure end-to-end performance utilizing HiL, SiL, and real-life testing.

  • Drive the release management lifecycle, ensuring all compliance and technical requirements are met for on-time delivery to projects and customers.

  • Build and maintain the safety matrix to guarantee that every software release is backed by rigorous, auditable test evidence.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Robotics, or a related technical field.

  • Experience: 3+ years of hands-on experience in working in safety-critical domains (e.g., Autonomous Driving/Automotive, Rail, Aerospace, or Robotics).

  • Proficiency with Python or Bash (for automating the weekly image build and flash process).

  • Strong understanding of networking protocols (UDP/TCP, PTP/NTP) and basic understanding of ROS2 middleware and DDS.

  • Solid familiarity with Linux environments and modern CI/CD pipelines (e.g., GitLab CI, GitHub Actions).

  • Familiarity with Bazel.

  • Direct experience testing or engineering perception algorithms or robotics systems is highly preferred.

  • Fluency in English is required; knowledge of German or French is a strong plus.

WHY FUTURAIL

  • Work on a meaningful project dedicated to revolutionizing mobility with a focus on long-term environmental impact.

  • Be part of an international and highly skilled team where decisions are made quickly, your voice matters and your impact is visible.

  • A salary package that includes VSOP for full-time employees, sharing the success of the company.

  • We are committed to your growth. We provide structured feedback and clear progression paths to support your personal and professional development.

  • Office in Werk1 - the most start-up friendly space in Munich.

OUR BENEFITS

  • 30 Days of Vacation: Plenty of time to explore and recharge.

  • Work from Anywhere: The flexibility to work from any location for up to 15 days per year.

  • Deutschland-Ticket: A subsidized pass for sustainable travel across Germany.

  • EGYM Wellpass: Subsidized access to a wide network of sports and wellness facilities.

  • Team Events: Regular, inspiring, and fun gatherings that strengthen our team.

Join us as an Autonomy System Test Engineer in our Munich office and help accelerate the shift from road to rail. If you're excited about real-world impact, cutting-edge autonomy, and building from zero to one, we’d love to hear from you.
